Write a new story

Is your mind focused on the past or the future?

When we define ourselves by our past it keeps us in the past, and limits our future too, but what if you could rewrite the story of your past so you can focus on creating a brand new future?

Your thoughts about your past is just a story (I know it feels like TRUTH)  but really your past is just a bunch of circumstances that you have assigned meaning to, we make those circumstances mean something about us- and that is where our power is, you can assign a whole new meaning to the things that happened in the past.

The past only exists in your mind, it doesn't exist anywhere else, we recreate our past everyday by thinking about it. What we make our past mean is causing our feelings now, not what happened then.

How can my thoughts about my past hold back?

I have had many a failed business, which I have secretly buried over the years and if I hadn't re-written my past I would never have set up my coaching business and I would not have continued with my design business either, because I would still be believing ‘I don't know how to run a profitable business’ (a story I told myself based on previous unsuccessful businesses)

Imagine you are thinking:

“I'm a failure because my last business didn't work”

If you live by this story about your last business, you will end up leaving you feeling broken and dejected and you will be priming yourself for failure and you’ll find all the evidence to prove to yourself that it isn't going to work. When we focus on what we don’t want to happen we end up getting more of that, focus on what you DO want, not what you don't want.

What do you think you are capable of?

If I asked you how you know what you’re capable of, what would you say?

Most people will go to their past to look at what they've accomplished in order to answer that question?

How would you answer that question if you could only look to the future, see how this line of  thinking in a whole new direction.

How do you remember the story of your past?

Get a pen and paper and don’t edit yourself, just write the story you tell yourself about your past.
Here is an example of my old story of the my past business ventures:

“My first business failed, I didn't know what to do or where to start, it was scary, I could have lost everything. I didn't show up for myself and I didn’t know how to sell my work. I obviously was not ever meant to do this, I hardly made any money, I could have lost everything, I clearly am not cut out for this.”

See how this story has me in a victim mentality?
Now look at your story and  strip all the thoughts and drama and pull out the facts,
Understand the neutral facts of what happened. What is left?
Then own it and accept it. Look back and understand, be compassionate with yourself, things did go this way, so now what?

Now I want you to re write that story in a way that serves you

Here is my new story of my past business ventures rewritten in a way that serves me:

“That business taught me so much, I had so much confidence in myself and I was so happy to set up a business, then after 1 year I decided to listen to myself, my idea didn't wasn't really feasible or profitable. I didn't have debts as I made the decision to stop pursuing the business at the perfect time.

It was really disappointing but coming out of that I have grown and learned so much, if that was supposed to happen I am so grateful for what I have learned from that experience, even though it was hard it has had positive results as I have turned it into a positive."

The lessons I learned from that business are invaluable, it has put me on the path that I am on today, I have used all of that knowledge to build a profitable business”

In version one of my past, my thinking was creating so much pain. In my new rewritten story I acknowledge the things that did not work but I don’t give energy to them, I give energy to everything that came from my experience, which is so much more empowering than my original story.

By looking at the positives in the past this moves us into acceptance rather than resistance and also invites us to grow and be more open and willing to try new things rather than quitting before we've even started. I believe the things that we believe have ‘gone wrong’ can be our greatest teachers. I like to think these things are sent to strengthen us, not weaken us.

The past cannot make us feel anything, It can’t cause us anything now, because it’s gone, it doesn't exist. Our thoughts bring it into the present, and the great news is you have full control over what you decide to think about this in the present.
